Taquile Island

Located 35 kilometers east of the port of Puno, this island has a native community of about 350 families that still follow 14th-century traditions and the principles of Incan life without considering the passage of time. The inhabitants retain the determination and courage to face adversity with constant, jovial humor. If there are fundamental common characteristics in Taquile, they are certainly the joy of living, good humor, smiles, and mutual help. Climbing along small, stone-lined trails, visitors are influenced by this surprising atmosphere that envelops the island and retains many customs of the old village lake.
