| The Department of Puno has an area of 72,012 km² and is located in southeastern Peru. The Puno highland has great cultural wealth, as the Pucara and Tiahuanaco civilizations were born on the plateau, giving rise to the largest empire of South America: the Incas.
The city of Puno is Peru's main lake port and the tourist and cultural center of the plateau. It is located 3,827 meters above sea level on the western shore of mythical Lake Titicaca. |
